CHAPTER SEVEN

Given squeezed out from under the table at the mention of a goblin king. He couldn’t believe that the Grand Prince—or Princess before him—would allow someone who called himself a king to remain within the borders of the principality.

“Well, yes,” Paxton said with a dramatic roll of his eyes. “That is why I brought her here.”

“Who’s the goblin king?” Ella asked.

“I trust that what I am about to tell you will stay between us,” the baron said. When Ella nodded, he continued, “We used to have an estate not far from here, and on the border of our land was the strangest place. Most people didn’t acknowledge it, as if it wasn’t there at all, but we could see the massive stone walls and the castle rising above them. And occasionally the strangest creatures would appear on our land, and we would have to chase them back inside.”

Ella’s hands twisted in her lap. “Was it, by any chance, surrounded by a barberry hedge?”

“Yes. How did you know?”

“The dragon. We didn’t talk about it in front of strangers, but everyone in my village knew of her. She lived in a cave in the side of a cliff, but the top was ringed with a barberry hedge.”

“The goblin king keeps to himself. He isn’t interested in the politics of Bretland nor the lives of people like us, but he has power of his own, magic, and if you need a way out of your bargain, he may be able to suggest one.” Pity filled the baron’s gaze. “But there will be a price. You may find yourself deeper in debt or facing a more difficult choice.”

Ella nodded, her face set. “How do we get an audience with this goblin king?”

“There’s only one way I know of,” Paxton said. “We have to find our way through the labyrinth that surrounds his castle, and ask.”

“Labyrinth?” Ella asked. “I’m not familiar with that word.”

“It’s a giant maze.”

Ella let out a disheartened sigh. Given pushed his head into her lap and she worried his ear between her fingers. “When do we start?”
